LED LCD TV's - A recent television


Before 30 years, each and every house possessed the famous CRT display televisions. Because of its disadvatages, it got more advancement as Flat Panel Displays (FPD). In flat panel dispalys, the LCD (Liqiud Crystal Displays), and PDP (Plasma Display Panels) became very famous.

On considering the LCD TV's, all countries expected a major replacement of CRT TV's with the LCD TV's since the last 2008. But, unexpectedly, due to some minute faults, the LCD TV's did'nt prove in the market. The Global Television market met a downfall in last 2008. So, as an advancement, the LCD TV's are now replaced with flat panel LCD LED TV's. Both the TV' s look same in vision. But, the technology differs.

What is LED LCD TV?

The LCD TV’s use different LCD voltages to change the current state of molecules, and there by, it controls the passage of light. On controlling the passage of light, the image falling on the display might be varied. It also uses it as the back light. Usually the back light for the LCD TV is taken from a built-in CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). The principle of common fluorescent tubes and the light-emitting principle of CCFL are some ought the same.
But, the main disadvantages with this CCFL are:

  • The life of CCFL is only about 50,000 hours. With the increase in usage time, the light will become dim and there after turns to yellow.
  • The backlight from CCFL passes through the RGB color membrane and so, the purity of the primary colors, will be affected which finally affects the color TV. Because of this problem, the LCD color TV’s meet only a NTSC standard of color range from 60% to 70%.

Because of these major disadvantages the LCD TV’s are now improved with LED insertion, and so called as LED LCD TV’s.The LED LCD TV uses the LED (Light Emitting Diode) as a backlight module.  According to the color, the LED’s can be divided into

  • White LED backlight and
  • RGB-LED backlight. 

Uses of White LED and RGB LED technologies:

  • White-light LED technology is mainly embodied in power consumption and is widely used for higher power requirements of mobile devices;
  • RGB-LED backlight is used in meeting the color standards, mainly used in high-end LCD monitors and LCD TV.

Reason of using LED’s:

Compared with CCFL backlight technology, LED backlight technology possess the following features:

Long-life :
LED Life expectation in general has reached about 100,000 hours which is doubled as of that for CCFL LCD TV.

Possess wide color range:
LEDLCD TV’s light possesses very high purity and a broader color gamut. It also guarantees to achieve the NTSC color range of 105%.

Ensures environmental protection:
The LED backlighting is not mercury, which helps for current environmental needs.
In addition, LED's size is very small and consumes very low power, and can help for ultra-thin LEd LCD TV production.

Because of these advantages, the LCD TV's are being replaced with LED LCD TV's.But, there are some disadvantages of LED TV's mainly in the cost aspect. Replacing the LCD TV with the new technology immediately doesnt happen easily. But, as a new version, a 70 inch LED LCD has been introduced in market in this 2009 by SAMSUNG to break out this dilemma. Let us wait and see, whether it breaks through or not.
